Parodontology
Periodontology is a new area of stomatology, which deals with the treatment of the disease of the periodontium, a disease which was thought incurable in the past. The periodontium consists of the gum and the structure that supports the tooth (cement covering the root, fibres of the periodontal membrane, alveolar bone). Parodontology prevents the regression of the gums and thus tooth loss.
A usual parodontological examination determines the condition of the gums, dental plaque index, depth of gingival pockets, stage of looseness of teeth, carious lesions, tooth crowns, regression of the bone, or other conspicuities. Almost all parodontological diseases can be cured by a usual treatment. Unfortunately, if parodontitis progresses, a special diagnostic investigation and therapy are necessary.
When the bacteria in the dental plaque cause inflammation to the gum, the resulting problem is called gingivitis. In the presence of certain genetic and organic factors, general diseases or chronically poor mouth hygiene, this process may extend to the supporting structure of the tooth as well, which results in an irreversible damage to the periodontium.
An aggressive course of parodontitis requires the rapid and extensive removal/elimination of all germs not only from the gingival pockets, but also from the entire oral cavity. Cleansing usually takes place at several meetings but unfortunately leads to bacteria being spread to newly created wounds. There is only one effective therapy, namely the cleansing of all gingival pockets and possibly contact areas of teeth, or the removal of loose teeth, during one meeting.
With time, such inflammation may lead to loosening or even loss of teeth. Signs of inflammation: bleeding of the gums during the cleaning of the teeth, or occurring just spontaneously, displacement of teeth, unstable teeth, bad odour of the breath, change in the colour and shape of the gums. The disease can be stopped by specific treatment and additional good mouth hygiene, so if you discover this problem, contact a dentist as soon as possible! It is also important to know that the problem is hereditary, so parents with that problem should take their children to the dentist for screening as soon as possible.
